Why do we follow Codes?

Although this passage is talking about the Codes of the Warrior, there are similarities between the Codes of the Black Caste and that of the Red Caste, for example both castes refuse to use poison, viewing it as a weapon employed by woman.

"Flee!" she said.
"I am of the Warriors," I said.
"But you may die," she said.
"That is acknowledged in the codes," I said.
"What are the codes?" she asked.
"They are nothing, and everything," I said. "They are a bit of noise, and the steel of the heart. They are meaningless, and all significant. They are the difference. Without the codes men would be Kurii."
"Kurii?" she asked.
"Beasts, such as ice beasts, and worse," I said. "Beasts such as the face you saw in the sky."
Beasts of Gor - 27:340

Taken From Role-play

[18:25] Plaga looks to the Killer. "We follow codes so that we know how to behave, how to conduct ourselves."

[18:24] Solomon Voss: "yes that is right, Lad. Although there is more to it than just that but you have the essence of it," he says.

[18:25] Plaga nods slowly and takes a sip from the water holding it in his mouth a moment before swallowing it, "may I ask what the more is?"

[18:28]  Solomon Voss: "you will need time to hear it if you ask me such a question, Lad" he replies

[18:29]  Plaga nods again, "for the moment I believe I have lots of time"

[18:31]  Solomon Voss regards the lad over the brim of his bowl as he finishes the rest of the Black Wine "Law is what Gorean society commands. Our Codes, in part, are our acknowledgment and agreement to be acepted within Gorean society. Furthermore, our absolute certainty in our own Caste beliefs could not be had without codification..."

[18:32]  Solomon Voss looks back into the fire as he continues...

[18:33]  Plaga nods slowly listening intently to the mysterious mans words

[18:35]  Solomon Voss: "The Black Caste Codes, our Laws, our Commands have developed across centuries. From that distant time we call "Contasta Ar" when the Priest-Kings created from the mud of the earth and the blood of Tarns, the first Gorean Man and did breath life into him." he says delighting in the flickering dancce of the fire. "These codes that I speak of were developed not to bind or gag us but to free us to work efficiantly and effectively..."

[18:36]  Solomon Voss: "turns to face the fellow and pauses before continuing, watching to see if he is listening...

[18:36]  Plaga eyes fall onto the mans own gaze and he watches, listening.

[18:37]  Solomon Voss: "Without Law, without Rule, there is only Chaos and disorder, there is only incivility and disrespect, there is only fleating weakness rather than lasting strength..." he says speaking clearing and with passion.

[18:38]  Solomon Voss again peers into the flames as his mind rushes back to when he too learnt from his own Master....

[18:38]  Plaga nods slowly his thoughts glancing to a Gor where codes werent followed, he remains quiet.

[18:39]  Solomon Voss: "Our Codes have evolved to become appropriate behaviour for those of our Caste. These Laws are what define us, distinguish and seperate us and place us head and shoulder above the rest." he tells the Lad, "We might be low of Caste, Lad but we are by far head and shoulders about them all" he says proudly continuing...

[18:40]  Plaga nods once more showing them an he is paying attention.

[18:42]  Solomon Voss: "Gorean society calls upon all of its Castes to follow their Codes. it is a requirement that must be fulfilled. Without the fulfillmnet of these desired tasks, Goreans simply will become equal to animals or worse still, allow there darker impulses to emerge and "control" their lives. Thus, our Codes act as a guardian against the inevitable anarchy that would engulf Gorean Society." he says falling silent,. He regards the lad for a moment and then returns his gaze to the flames content in his explaination of what the Codes are and why we need them.

[18:43]  Plaga reaches up and rubs his jawline with the back of his hand a moment, smearign the dirt, letting the logic of the mans words sink in, he nods slowly.

[18:44]  Plaga takes a drink from his mug and speaks up quietly, "I never thought of it that way".

[18:46]  Solomon Voss: "Most do not, Lad but when you have been a Black Caste Assassin for as long as I have, you might start to look deeper into things" he says regarding the lad, a slight smile on his lips.
