Role-play Tips
To get the best out of your own Role-play and by that I mean, maximising your own enjoyment and satisfaction when acting out your role, Role-players should understand a few simple "rules of engagement" which will go a long way to enhancing not only your own RP but that of everyone else who are interacting with you.
Of course an individual can happily Role-play alone but when there are two Rper's present, a "Chess" mentality must be observed.
In Chess, a player can only move once before waiting for his opponent to then make his move. For a player to move twice in succession is considered cheating, in Role-play, if an actor does not wait for a response to his or her post, be it spoken or emoted, it is simply considered rude. Always allow for a response to your actions, there is no need to rush and in doing so you will gain the respect of your fellow Rper and you will find that Role-play will flow and evolve.
This is somewhat more difficult when there are three or more actors Role-playing together, there could be several topics developing about you simultaneously. Simply take your time to type exactly what it is you want to say or emote and try not to be rushed into posting just to get a word in edgeways. All this will achieve is messy, typo ridden below par RP.
One-liners
One-lining is considered poor Role-play interaction, although in some instances I do believe it has a place, particularly in the heat of battle, but this is my own personal view. Also I want you to understand that "one-lines" only apply to actions or emotes but not to speech. Conversations can be short and snappy, especially if your character does not like to talk in paragraphs.
Maximus Villian strolls toward his post, he was ordered to guard the main gate to the city and guard it he would. Maximus was a thick set fellow of average height, his legs were like tree trunks, making him look impossible to bring down and the rest of him was equally so formed. A bosk of a man, wide and physically imposing. "You there! Stranger! What are you doing with that lock, are you trying to pick it?" said the city guard to the skinny fellow before him.
"No"
Maximus Villian eyes the fellow, not at all happy with the mans short response. The guards eyes narrowed with distrust, he would get to the bottom of this and quickly. Maximums enjoyed his job, it gave him ample opportunity to make people’s lives miserable. "Then tell me, Stranger, what are you doing there apart from looking nervous and rather sweaty?" he says inquisitively, the tone of his question riddled with over blown authority.
"Nothing"
Not everyone has to Para Role-play and nor should they feel they must when interacting with those who do. How you RP is all part of your own characters personality so develop it the way you want, not by those about you.
In the Heat of Battle
I have resided in many towns and Cities of Gor over my time and I can honestly say that in all of them, the citizens have all supported a "No One-lining" policy. Yet when their Homestone had been raided, and certainly in the case of a cities Warriors, who quite frankly should lead by example, I have witnessed mass one-lining by the defending forces as well as those attacking.
[21:03] Gorean Meter 2.8.1: Charlie Chaplin hit you with Wicked sword (20%) - strike type: arrow~direct
[21:03] Gorean Meter 2.8.1: Charlie Chaplin Has Captured Solomon Voss!
[21:03] Charlie Chaplin: removes all of your weapons.
[21:03] Charlie Chaplin: binds your hands and legs.
[21:03] Charlie Chaplin: removes all of your weapons.
Now at this point, RP often breaks down into OOC, the flow is disrupted, others join in, RP collapses.
[21:04] Solomon Voss: Hey! One-liners Man! Who taught you to RP, a monkey?
My own personal view with regard "under fire" RP is to accept it, in such instances to break RP is petty and an excuse to invalidate your unfortunate position. You are netted and unconscious after all so there is nothing you can do until your meter resets by itself. You are in effect, out of the game.
I am not saying I agree with one-lining but I am saying when it happens to you during a hectic raid scenario, then accept it for what it is. People trying to offer something rather than nothing at all, they themselves trying to avoid being taken down while they stop to emote.
In Conclusion
Only attempt to emote the expected minimum of 10 words when you are sure you are safe to do so. Set up your view so that you can clearly see and react quickly to avoid an attack on your person during your emoting. Always strive to be the best Role-player you can be. Avoid OOC drama at all costs. Your plight will not last forever.
Gob Mobbing
There are two aspects to this form of negative Role-play.
1. Posting a huge wad of text and then attacking before your opponent has time to read and react against.
2. Emoting an action that makes it impossible for your opponent
to counter.
[21:03] Charlie Chaplin: watches the scribe for a moment, then decides to approach the Blue Caste.
[21:03] Charlie Chaplin: removes his sword and thrusts it into the scribes gut.
The correct and fair form would be as follows:
[21:03] Charlie Chaplin: removes his sword and thrusts it towards the scribes gut.
One could make it even more clear by way of the following:
[21:03] Charlie Chaplin: removes his sword and thrusts it towards the scribes gut. If the scribe fails to avoid the attack, he will surely suffer a fatal wound.
